Kristen Stewart’s “affected emo shtick” has gotten tired, says Vanity Fair

wenn3445255

Earlier today, I covered the new images from Snow White and the Huntsman, starring our very own lip-biter, Kristen Stewart. I had only seen photos from the Comic-Con photo call/press conference, not any video or interviews. But I just had to look up some more stuff about Kristen after reading this item from Vanity Fair – it’s courtesy of James Wolcott’s blog:

After the Snow White and the Huntsman rollout in hallowed Hall H, I was remarking to Justin how tired Kristen Stewart’s affected emo shtick had gotten, how she slumps in her chair on stage half-turned to the audience (while all of her fellow panelists faced front), hanging her head as if all of the fame were too much and too new for her, swallowing her answers and hiding behind her hair. Given the dozens of press and fan events she’s done, when is she going to stop acting like a teenager dragged out of her room to the dinner table?

To which a young fan of restricted height but loyal fierceness, overhearing us, wheeled her head around and said: “Kristen’s not pretending, she’s just REALLY SHY!”

I stand corrected.

[From Vanity Fair]

“Kristen Stewart’s affected emo shtick” is the best description I’ve heard in a while, as is “acting like a teenager dragged out of her room to the dinner table.” I was looking up videos from the Snow White conference to see if I could find Kristen slumped over sideways in her chair, and wouldn’t you know…

CB found this one, where Kristen sounds like she’s about to cry as she’s answering a question:

See… two sides to her “shyness” or “nervousness”. When she seems like she’s about to cry just from the sheer terror or getting the first question, I do feel for her. THAT seems genuine, like she is truly about to have some kind of breakdown. But when she can’t even be bothered to sit in a chair like a normal adult woman…? It feels like emo shtick. Is it a combination of all of the above?

Here’s something I don’t understand: why doesn’t Kristen really invest in public speaking classes or a personal coach? There are LOTS of exercises, both mental and physical, that she could do to help her with her public persona as an unprofessional, lip-biting spaz. Is it because that at this point, she’s just married to this shtick? Or is her “shyness” really just that overwhelming?

One last interview, which Kristen did with E! News’s Ben Lyons. I give her points for being engaged, one-on-one with Ben. I take away points because of the motherlode of nervous tics, lip-biting, hair-molesting, twitching, eye rolling, etc. She could also benefit from some diction classes.

Oh, and people are freaking out because she did press with a lighter hanging out of her pocket – ZOMG, pothead/smoker!

    “affected emo shtick”- so true!

I’m sick to death of her. I don’t think she has an ounce of acting talent.

  2. heebeegeebee says:

Yay, VF!! Someone please tell this girl to grow up and come out.

  3. terracotta says:

kaiser-a quick thought for you. I watch her, and I would bet money she has an anxiety disorder of some kind, like social anxiety. My bff has SAD. Her turning in her seat like that? Classic nervous gesture my bff does when she presents papers(she’s in grad school). So much of Kristen reminds me of my friends struggle just to keep it together and not cry or have a meltdown in public when put in the spotlight like that. I don’t know, I just feel like there’s something there beyond entitlement, something much bigger that has this chick acting this way after years of being in the spotlight. Notice how she does better in a smaller situation too with the interview-classic sign right there to me.

  4. Blue says:

She really confuses me as well. Some interviews she’s animated and into it. Connecting well. And other ones she’s all looking down, and monotone, she seems lost. Maybe she’s high.

  5. Quest says:

She is so over-rated and immature. Emo Shtick…ha!

Edit: Showbiz may not essentially be the right line of work for “shy” or “socially anxious” people like KStew, if that is really the case… but I think not

  6. Jerry says:

I’m tired of her fans harrassing anyone who dares to critisize their Goddess only for pointing out that her “shy-act” is nothing but PR strategy to justify her arrogance. She takes herself way too seriously considering how untalented she is.

  7. antisara says:

    Stew-Polly-Pocket-EMO-Troll what?

  8. Heatheradair says:

    Have we seen this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKKAVYI7vdU&feature=player_embedded

Loved it – the girl totally nailed the “over it” stage presence of the K-Stew.

  9. crtb says:

She is one of the luckiest young actors in Hollywood today. She seems to take it all for granted. When this whole Belle and Edward thing gets old, which will be soon, no one will remember her name.

  10. tdolo says:

what is it about kristen stewart that brings out such irrational hatred? I think she’s actually a bit boring to deserve such praise or hatred to be honest. She can be sullen, she can underdress, she can come off weird. But there’s so many other bigger twats in this world to hate over, I don’t get why the attention stops on her so often.

  11. Lacey says:

@terracotta: Good insight. I never thought about that before, but I think you could be right about that.

  12. sharylmj says:

it’s so weird to me how someone can be so shy and be in the entertainment business. Michael Jackson was the same way. They can act or sing or dance up a storm on stage, but put them out there one on one with the public and they can’t deal with it. I think she has gotten SO MUCH better overtime with the way she interacts with fans and talk shows, etc

  13. terracottat says:

quest-I don’t know if that’s her problem either. But having social anxiety would make a lot of professions undoable if you aren’t willing to expose yourself a little bit. They can’t become agoraphobics! Being “socially anxious” can cause folks to go into full blown panic attacks, it’s scary. Again, have no clue if Kristen is dealing with something. But her inconsistency, from being able to handle some interviews, then looking like she wants to melt into a puddle on the ground, is enough for me to question whether she’s being a bitch or if something else is happening.

  14. Lisa Turtle says:

You know what else makes you anxious and paranoid in public? Smoking pot. Just saying…

I’m ready for this “actress” to fade away.

  15. mia girl says:

If I had to sit next to the beautiful Charlize Theron I would slump in my chair and hang my head too!

  16. Jerry says:

    tdolo: HATRED?

Since when is calling an unthankful spoiled actress who doesn’t appreciate her luck HATRED?

If you want to see real hatred look at that guy in Norway or the Westboro Baptist Church and then come back and call us haters.

  17. WaywardGirl says:

My mom thinks she has some anxiety disorder

  18. Rhiley says:

That clip you posted the other day of the K Stew Public Speaking Seminar Tapes knocked it out of the park. She’s a cute girl but she has little talent and she doesn’t seem very interesting. I am sure as long as she is in demand she will continue to act, but really the girls behind the starbucks counter where I live are just as cute as K Stew and have way way way more personality. They can sell the hell out of a latte and biscotti much better than K Stew can sell her upcoming flicks.

  19. laura says:

Oh give me a break with social anxiety looking like a kid on weed. Kids with social anxiety usually gravitate towards weed to take the edge of them.

I’m sure Kristen tokes and all, but she never comes off like she’s high in interviews and panels. She just comes off really nervous and awkward. She may just be that way, or she may be dealing with an anxiety issue too. Wouldn’t be surprised, you see Rob and Taylor constantly trying to calm her in public. I’ve seen Rob like push his leg into hers when she wouldn’t stop shaking it all crazy.

  20. mia girl says:

If I had to sit next to the beautiful Charlize Theron I would slump in my chair and hang my head too!

EDIT: I agree with @terracottat and think Stewart exhibits SAD type behavior.
@quest – Many successful actors/performers suffer from SAD, i.e. Barbara Streisand, Kim Bassinger, Meg White, Lawrence Oliver. “Stage Fright” is a common symptom of SAD.

  21. kelly says:

Of course she has worries look at how many of you jump to put her down

You people are evil she 21 if she not your cup of tea leave her

Stop creating hate website about her

    just leave her

  22. Jerry says:

She’s in the closet and frustrated she can’t come out. At least that ‘s my theory. This girl is unhappy. It’s clear. She has money so why is she forcing herself to this if she hates it so much?
Don’t tell me it’s the acting, if she wanted to act without the public attention she’d be doing theater. But she obviously wants to be a star otherwise she wouldn’t have signed to that Snow White project.

  23. TL says:

WaywardGirl said: “My mom thinks she has some anxiety disorder”

I can see that. Maybe out of all the celebrities that say they are “shy”, she actually is and on top of that has a social disorder. No one knows but she’s not the least bit annoying as other young female celebs.

  24. tdolo says:

jerry: look up the word “hatred.” Hatred doesn’t mean you have to be a pathological ahole, it means to have an intense dislike.

You just declared that some stranger you don’t know is unthankful, spoiled, ungrateful–and that was just in one sentence, babe.

That’s an example of disliking her. And I would add it’s irrational cause you don’t know for sure since you don’t know her.

  25. DethHammer says:

So EVERY Hollywood celeb has to act perpetually happy, smiley, energetic and overly-confident at all times. LOL. I understand that she is famous and has a job many can only dream of, but being a little sullen or surly at times is actually pretty natural and human. And if she has anxiety disorder or depression, people should really should stop criticizing her for her tics and petty fare like that. Of course, we haven’t yet ruled out if she’s just being an entitled d-bag.

  26. Jerry says:

I’ve never seen an actress/actor complaining so much as her, calling herself a rape victim while flipping off the paps, is that what shy people do, oh and calling her fans retards. Sure Twitards are crazy but they are the ones paying her millions. She’s rude and yes I repeat unthankful.

  27. Shannon says:

I was diagnosed with a general anxiety disorder when I was 8, which manifested in social anxiety at times, in addition to full blown panic attacks. I also took acting classes that involved an onstage performance every year until I went to college, plus lead roles in several plays in high school.

There’s a huge difference between playing a role onstage (or I would imagine, on screen), and being yourself in front of a bunch of people and having to answer questions on the spot. A lot of people don’t realize this. Acting allows you to inhabit the world of a different individual. It’s not you, so you don’t have the same shyness or awkward feelings you would if you were just standing up there as yourself. And especially with acting on screen, you’re working with the same people the whole time and get to know them well. The end product isn’t even like a play, where you do it in front of a huge crowd. So yes, Kristen does have to be in front of people when she does things like this, and she’s incredibly awkward because she’s uncomfortable. It doesn’t mean she’s going to have a breakdown or anything, or that she’s not cut out for show business. I’d rather she suck at interviewing than be a vapid idiot on screen. I’m not even really a fan of her, and the twitching when she’s acting is distracting, but I also do think she has genuine acting abilities that will become more apparent once she comes out of her shell a little.

  28. Turtle Dove says:

This is THE actress of her generation. Kristen doesn’t seem to be a bad person, but she’s not interesting. I could go to a high-school cafeteria and see the same performance by 100s of teens. She’s no Hallee or Jennifer Lawrence that’s for sure.

Maybe it’s the internet that’s taking some of the sparkle off actors, but so many of them are uninteresting and lack the charisma of those from yesteryear. There are so few amazing standouts anymore. We’re being bombarded with mediocrity that’s hailed as stellar. Real talent isn’t being fostered and famewhores/wannabees are being pushed to the forefront.

  29. Cate says:

Hasn’t Kristen admitted she is awkward, shy and nervous at these events? I could see you complaining about her behavior if she always insisted that she was perfectly well spoken but she has stated in several interviews the panels are hard for her.

  30. Nat says:

Does anyone else think she looks like a hotter Janelle from Teen Mom?

I am so glad to hear of other ppl fed up with her and who also find her extremely annoying.
@tdolo, for me, I find her so annoying because Hollywood is a notoriously difficult arena to find success in, and the paychecks and rewards of success are ridiculously high, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was way up there in terms of salaries esp for Twilight. And this chick cannot act. I CRIIINGE every time I see her on screen. It’s basically her lip biting twitchy self squeezing out some lines from a script. It is not acting… she is not transforming herself into a character. I honestly believe that any pretty face could be on par with what passes as her ‘acting’ on screen.

@heatheradair, LOL, I just laughed my butt off at that video

  31. Cheyenne says:

I’ve got nothing against this young woman, but she’s an indifferent actress at best, and I’m betting that after the final Twilight film is released in 2012 she will vanish off the radar and fade into permanent obscurity.

  32. ladybert62 says:

If she is this shy – why is she an actress?

Is she has some type of nervous/anxiety disorder – why is she an actress?

I am tired of seeing her unattractive face everywhere.

  33. isabel says:

i have never liked her. i feel sorry for the director who did not want to cast her in the part. She is a terrible one trick pony of an actress,
I am sick of her holier than thou attitude. I dont believe for a minute that she is “shy”. She acts like a b##ch so her pr is to portray her as shy . Who keeps buying into this? Arent these twihards growing up and getting lives yet

  34. Tigger says:

I don’t care for her. She’s extremely bland.

But here’s the argument I don’t understand, when people say things like ‘Oh, she’s the only actress in Hollywood that isn’t a famewhore,’ or ‘It’s so rare to find a young actress who doesn’t want all the attention,’ WTF? There’s so many young actresses who are better than her who aren’t attention whores, for example:

Ellen Page, Jena Malone, Evan Rachel Wood, Emma Stone, Saoirse Ronan(I think I spelled that right), Jennifer Lawrence, Dakota Fanning, Chloe Moetz, etc.

  35. Tammy says:

    She looks like a man

  36. KJ says:

I think we’ve got a few good theories going on. I tend to find myself in the anxious/pot smoker camp. She reminds me a lot of myself in that at times she seems completely out of place and uncomfortable with being the center of attention, and because I enjoy the herb. But one thing I’ve figured out is that I cannot be in stressful public situations high. I used to be a cocktail waitress at a nice restaurant and some of my coworkers would get stony faced before hand. After about two or three shifts of joining them, I concluded I was just too much of an anxious, paranoid person sans pot. Smoking enhances reality, so if you’re home with friends or at a movie, it can be super relaxing and awesome. But if you hate, say, having the spotlight on you or thinking on your feet in front of audiences, it makes you that much more uncomfortable. I could see Kristen thinking if she smokes before these press things, she could get through it better, but all it does is highlight how self conscious she is.

  37. Anna says:

It is EXTREMELY common for actors to be shy.

Playing a convincible part in a movie or play has no significance whatever on who that same person is IRL.

Saying that actors should not be shy or have social anxiety disorders is just ignorant.

  38. curleque says:

Unpolished, unprofessional, and extremely immature. It has nothing to do with shyness.

  39. KJ says:

@ladybert62 – a LOT of actors are introverted people. A lot of artists, performing and visual. It’s much more common than you’re assuming. A lot of actors find it easier to pretend to be someone else for a role than being themselves in any public situation. Kristen may or may not be that way, I’m just saying that’s a flawed assumption.

  40. crizo says:

you all shut up all of you above, i dont care if you are from vanity care or whatever magazine, leave kristen alone, she is beautifull, very beautifull in her own way,and go take your picture of all the good speaking, sitting pretty and half naked most of the time girls they belong in yours writting not kristen she is herself all the time no pretending go kristen, dont ever change keep yourself just the way you are . Case closed

  41. Onyx XV says:

“Gotten” tired? That shiz has BEEN tired since the beginning. And that poor child cannot act her way out of a paper bag. If she’s shy, or has some type of anxiety disorder, she can retire from public life – it’s OK with me.

  42. TL says:

Jerry said: “I’ve never seen an actress/actor complaining so much as her,”

You dont read what emma watson whines about do you? Out of all the young celebs emma watson is the worst when it comes to griping and complaining. The media loves her so it takes celebitchy and other like websites to speak out on it. Oh, and thank you Kaiser for that.

I’m sure the paps are not that great. I’ve read they can be very intrusive, pushy and rude to get a reaction for that money shot or video. I can sympathize with Stewart and even Watson for this.

  43. KJ says:

I think what I have the hardest time with is what is her appeal? She’s not that good of an actress, she’s not exceptionally pretty (in fact I find her slightly in bred sometimes), and she’s clearly never going to be some shining spokes-actress who tells great stories on late night talk show couches. Why is she in such high demand?

  44. Zoey says:

Is it really true that the director was pressured into casting her in this because of her Twihard-fans? I can believe that, cause I have read an interview with the director of Winter´s Bone who said she had been heavily pressured into casting the resident “it-girl”, an empty-headed twat of an actress as her lead, and it was heavily implied that this had been Kristen Stewart. Thank god she stonewalled against it, because then we wouldn´t have gotten that amazing performance by Jennifer Lawrence. I feel sorry for whatever actress that would have been cast in place of Kristen Stewart in this Snow White-thing, though while this looks like a trainwreck of a movie, it will surely make big bucks and could have been a break for an actual actress.

  45. melannie says:

Wow, I love how everyone attacking this young woman forgets to acknowledge that none of you knows her personally. I’ve read through these vicious insults and she’s been accused of being a lesbian? (hmm, she only dates guys & is currently dating RPattz), stoned for this interview because she has a lighter in her back pocket & is a bit nervous, and even bitching about her leaning and not sitting in her chair facing the audience at all times in her chair. Just wow! Judgemental and incredibly unfair much? Maybe she’s leaning because she is the very last person at the far end of the table and she’s trying to hear & see the others on the panel? But no, it’s easier to insult her and berate her and accuse her of things no one here has the right to do since no one here knows her personally. If you don’t like her, simply look the other way. But I think you guys who are playing chairside shrinks are enjoying this way too much. Now who has the problem?

  46. Kim says:

Curleque called it. Shy my behind! She has a bad personality period. She isnt talented – she got very lucky with Twilight. I say if she doesnt like the business (media talks & paparazzi are part of the business) then leave, there are many talented girls ready & willing to replace her who would be thankful and have a great attitude about being blessed with fame and money.

  47. Hanna says:

She’s acting like “been there, done that” kind of attitude. Well guess what honey, you’ve done nothing except freaking twilight. Gotta have a nice attitude if you want to become a good person in public-for starts. Acting-wise, I’m kind of excided to see the turnout of her very new film. Would see if she got talent or not- which we’ve seen in the runaways, when she sadly turned out to be a horrid actress.

  48. Quest says:

I stand my ground…I don’t think KStew is shy she is just full of it.

  49. Mia says:

Someone has just caught up with those of us who were already tired of her act. Be her socially inept or whatever, she knows she has a problem & won’t get any help for it. Summit offered her help back when the 1st Twilight movie went nuclear. She didn’t want it. So, yes…I’m going to snark & call her Sullen until the cows come home or she disappears from the scene.

  50. RL says:

This girl calls herself an actress (debatable). At least try to ACT like a competent young woman, doing press for your next project. ACT professional.

If this is all too much for you, find a 9-5 job and do community theatre, there will be no press involved there. I’m sure the next person in line would be glad to take your place …

  51. cara says:

she’s in the closet and that’s why she’s cranky? oh, jeezus mary and and joseph. someone’s been reading too much twilight slash fanfiction.

  52. Jamie says:

#34, Evan Rachel Wood is the perfect example of an attention/famewhore actually IMO. Everything she says and does is strictly for attention. I find her completely overrated as well. When she was younger, I actually thought she was talented. But, I haven’t felt that way about her in years.

#37, completely agreed. Well said. It is an extremely ignorant thing to say.

I don’t get all the irrational hatred towards this girl either. I’m not a fan of hers at all and I wish this Twilight crap would just go away, but as a teacher I can tell when someone is socially awkward or has a nervous disorder. I see it in a number of students all the time every single day. She definitely has some type of anxiety disorder – she displays all the classic signs.

  53. lyla says:

The funny thing is show me the anthesis of KRisten and I’ll show you bullshit. Kristen seems self indulgent and up her own ass. AS DO ALL HER PEERS. Taylor Swift plays the media game like a finely tuned violin, Emma Watson has earned a difficult rep this last promotional tour due to claiming illness while out at spas while her coworkers pick up her slack. Taylor can’t sing and Emma is pretty weak at acting too. yet they get passes time and again.

  54. i.want.shoes says:

I think her 2 front teeth are too big, and that’s why she never closes her mouth.

All this “leave KStew alone” is making me think of the “Leave Britney alone!!!” guy.

  55. melannie says:

So this is where the Kristen Stewart public lynching mob is congregating at the moment?

  56. joya says:

I’m in the “socially awkward/anxiety” camp too, just because it’s pretty plain as day what’s going on if you have every worked with kids in some capacity. i was a camp counselor, Kristen reminds me of all the kids I ever had who are dealing with social challenges. And the more people highlight, the worse it gets. Look at Kristen-she seems worse than when she was little kid actress to be honest.

And saying she needs to get out of the business is a horrible message to send people. Like they need to locked away in attics like lepers! No, she’s fine obviously where she is, she needs to work a lot harder at managing this better.

  57. lrm says:

i have never seen her act, and am not interested in going out of my way to do so….
she always looks stoned to me-and maybe THAT is why she is sooo shy and nervous?
it can make you mellow, but also edgy/paranoid/extra sensitive and uncomfortable in large groups of people….
anyway, posts on her are always sooo boring. but i’ve read all theother threads today that i’m into-
and that emo schtick looked potentially amusing.
    Alas, snore fest here….see ya.

  58. Runs with Scissors says:

Actually, she’s a very fine actress in some of her old stuff. Very understated and intense.

I too think she has an anxiety disorder, but I guess it’s easier to just project your own bad attitude/insecurities onto her.

I watched those interviews and she seemed fine. Nervous but fairly articulate.

I really like Charlize Theron, but that comment she made about, “well, I’m an Oscar winner and…” was cringe inducing, even if she was trying to be funny, it was much worse than anything Kristin did. Imagine the grief she’d get if Kristin said something as obnoxious as that.

Oh and just because she doesn’t flash her ass everywhere doesn’t make her a lesbian, *eye roll*

  59. Jamie says:

#56, well said. I worked as a camp counselor as well for three years and saw this all the time. Then, I became a teacher and saw it even more on a daily basis. When you work with children consistently and constantly, it’s pretty easy to pick up on the signs of what’s going on here.

It is a horrible message and it’s extremely insensitive. If everybody in the entertainment business who was socially awkward or nervous or weird got out of the business, you’d be losing a whole chunk of people. I mean, really. You’d be surprised at how common it actually is out there.

  60. waterunderbridge says:

You know, I have no problem with her being socially awkward, I have a problem with her being rude. Look at Jesse Eisenberg, he openly said he deals with social anxiety, yet he never seems to come off as ungrateful like she does. Also, I mainly want her to go away because she just can´t act and her face is annoying as hell.

  61. sarahb says:

I get not seeing her appeal,I get Kaiser for thinking she’s a bit of a shit. I don’t get how personal people get with their insults of her though. Like half of these comments sound as if you are talking about someone you know. Like Katy Perry drives me nuts, but I don’t have some personal level of dislike for her. I’m not going to dissect her body shape, or fixate on her sexual orientation, or swear no one has ever sang as badly as her in the history of all singing.

I guess….I don’t get this intensity that accompanies kstew dislike.

  62. Annie_Grey says:

Lisa-I was wondering that, too. She does get paranoid looks on her face frequently.

  63. Katia says:

Someone on some other forum was a therapist or psych student and was hypothesizing that she may suffer from generalized anxiety or have a social phobia.

Makes a lot of sense to me.

  64. Cate says:

@waterunderthebridge. I am humored you used Jesse E as an example. Jesse refused to walk the photo wall for a charity event that he was sponsoring and also check out his interview on Jay Leno. He often puts his foot in his mouth and isn’t quite as perfect as you may think. ALSO, KAISER you are becoming as predictable as you claim Kristen is with your constant complaining of Kristens eye roll and lip biting, perhaps it is time for you to find some new material.

  65. jerusha says:

jamie, 52-my thoughts exactly. If thousands of people were telling me I was a masculine, big toothed, ungrateful, closeted lesbian who was weird, I’d probably do much worse than her in public!

  66. Nat says:

@Melannie… Jesus everloving christ… you are on a celebrity GOSSIP BLOG…
Take a deep breath and think about what that means for a second. Reading comments like yours makes me want to bang my head against a wall. Are you really coming to a celebrity gossip blog, and chastising people for gossiping about celebrities? Really?….

  67. jaime says:

Awkwardness is fine, imo. Lots of actors are shy and awkward. But she’s often just rude and offensive. Rolling her eyes, getting snippy, the constant swearing that comes across more like a 14-year old trying to sound cool, acting like she’d rather be anywhere than where she is, and generally seeming entirely ungrateful for all the opportunities that have been placed in her lap. And the excuse is always that she wants to be a serious actress, not a star. That she was unprepared for fame. Well, she just signed on for her second huge franchise before her first has even wrapped up. Explain that one to me, “Kristen is an indie actress” people.

  68. Cate says:

@Jaime OTR is an indie film so are you saying Kristen must only do indies or can she do a blockbuster and then a few indies and still be considered an indie actress? Odd that her directors often talk so highly of Kristen yet all you see is ungrateful. Bill Condon apparently raved about Kristen and her dedication to the saga at comic con.

  69. mary simon says:

I love Charlize Theron -“Well, I’m an Oscar winner and I take the work seriously.” I get the feeling she’s not too impressed with Kristen, either.

  70. jaime says:

I’m saying her fans need to stop talking about how un-Hollywood she is when she signs on for huge franchises, has an extremely aggressive PR team who push her on every magazine cover possible, supposedly doesn’t care about fashion yet goes to the Met Gala every year, is “caught” by the paparazzi just as often as her supposed “famewhore” contemporaries, etc. Face it, Kristen is no different than most of the actresses her fans put down to prop her up. Only difference is that she’s never had to work as hard as the majority of them since she grew up in the business and has no concept of how lucky she is.

  71. Cate says:

@jaime pushes her on magazine covers? I think vogue ASKS you to be on the cover.Attends the met gala like her unhollywoodish contemporaries like saiorse, Emma, Carey m, Mia? Caught by the papps like Carey,Emma Stone, kiera? Are they famewhores too? Where are Kristen Stewart fans trashing her contemporaries? A lot of Kristen fans seem to like Mia, Carey, Emma S etc?

  72. john thing says:

She’s stoned. Bad actress. Doesn’t appreciate her good fortune. Pretends she doesn’t want the attention. Do something else, stupid girl.

  73. Blizz says:

Personally, it really seems to me like she has very bad social anxiety. When I watch her, she looks exactly how I feel when I interact with any one or am put on the spot in a group. I take meds to make me function more normally, but it’s still always kinda there. I suspect she is more than just simply “shy” or doing a shtick. Most likely she doesn’t realize what’s wrong with her exactly- I thought I was just shy too. I think she slumps and has bad posture because she is subconsciously trying to make herself less noticeable- I often catch myself doing the same thing when I’m nervous. Before I took medication, I would often get really irritable as well when I was anxious- may account for some of the attitude she throws around at times. And no, I’m not a fan of hers, and I think Twilight is f-ing stupid- I just think there’s more going on than an emo act.

  74. kimberly says:

some interviews she’s high for others she’s not.

I didn’t see anything wrong with the clip above.

  75. almond says:

I find it so funny that her fans keep bringing up what this or that director said about her, how much they praised her and stuff.
Well, what did you expect? For them badmouth the star of their film? You speak of all this praise as if it’s such a rare thing to hear from the mouths of directors and co-stars. Everyone kisses everyone’s ass in HW. So her big fluffy praise is worth less than nothing. But this is the argument that her rabid imdb fans fall back on when someone dares to criticizes her talent or “acting technique”.

As for her having social anxiety, if it’s true, than I’m sorry to hear that, but I also know that there is help for people with this problem. From the looks of things she hasn’t gotten it. But I don’t think that that is all there is to her behaviour. Her actions contradict this image of a serious, involved ACTOR with social adaptation problems. she just signed on to star in a big deal movie. Yet she cannot abide the attention of “retard” fans and “rapist” paps. Come on. If she’s not playing the game and she likes to focus exclusively on her craft then why is she wasting her time doing magazine spreads and covers. Not playing the game, indeed. Ugh.

As a last note, hatred is a very strong word. It evokes deep feelings and emotional involvement. I’d say we are all annoyed by this girl, to various degree. She doesn’t bleep on anyone’s radar prominently enough to elicit such emotional responses. Get over yourselves.

  76. dina says:

You can’t really say you are okay w/awkwardness but not rude ness, because part of the awkwardness stems from doing things that are unintentionally offensive to others. Socially awkward people have shitty social cue reading skills, they tend to be abrupt and seemingly abrasive, overly direct, etc.

I’m not saying she gets a free pass, she needs to take responsibility for things on her end. But if she is dealing with some anxiety issues, or even is just a really nervous awkward person, a lot of you are misinterpreting her behavior.

  77. celia says:

My sister has a general anxiety disorder. To what almond said, there is help for the problem, but it does not get “solved” with a pill or therapy. What you attempt to do is manage it, and sometimes you manage better than you do on other days. This would explain the fact that she can be great and engaging in one interview, and then go on a panel in Hall H and look like she’s about to cry and is visibly shaking.

You MANAGE anxiety issues, you don’t solve it.

And it’s seriously offensive when I see posters talk about her getting out of the industry just cause she falters here and there on a panel discussion or fumbles in an interview with her words. Like they aren’t allowed to hold jobs in the public sector or something.! She’s a young gal, she had fame come at her quickly. She’s improving in her public demeanor, there’s hope she’ll get there one day.

  78. rosac says:

almond – you’re still clinging onto that “rape” comment she apologized for? And look for the original interview for the “retard” comment. Dumb comment, but it was about the producers trying to maniuplate things. She’s a dumb kid sometimes, but you and others here take her quite seriously. Acting like she’s not blipping on your radar? Oh honey, your novel length entry says otherwise.

  79. orly says:

Rosac, this was the ‘retarded’ quote:

“I just didn’t pay attention,” Stewart recalls. “I was like, ‘You guys are celebrating something that has not come true yet. So, you are really retarded and have nothing to do with this creative process and I really don’t want to hear you celebrate in front of me. Get out of here! It’s my responsibility!”

    ***
I fail to see what that had to do with producers. Do you have a link which says it was in reference to producers? As I recall, she was talking about the fans who were excitedly celebrating Edward and Bella being brought to life.

  80. Ugh says:

When will he fans give up the “She’s only *insert current age* leave her alone” bullshit? At some stage, one needs to take responsibility for their actions. And that “rape comment” that so many of her fans so blithely dismiss as her being a “dumb kid” was offensive. Whether it was intended or not, she offended a shit load of people. It shows she’s either callous and doesn’t give a shit or that she’s so supremely unintelligent that she has no idea what context she uses words in. I can bet that women, men and children in war torn countries like Sudan, Bosnia, DRC etc who are and were systematically raped by “soldiers” would far prefer to have their photo taken and earn more money in three months than most see in a life time.

That apology she issued? Typical Kristen. She didn’t take any responsibility for what she said at all. Full of hyperbole.

“I really made an enormous mistake – clearly and obviously. And I’m really sorry about my choice of words. I’ve made stupid remarks before, and I’ve always reasoned, ‘Whatever. They can think what they want”Violated’ definitely would have been a better way of expressing the thought.” “People thinking that I’m insensitive about this subject rips my guts out. I made a big mistake.”

She’s running out of excuses, excuses her FANS give her. She needs to grow up (And she’s not the only one. Lohan, Hilton et al are all the same) The “I’m so original, I’m above it all” schitck isn’t endearing to people with half a brain. Thank God more and more people are starting to see it. If we don’t excuse this behaviour from regular teens in society, why should we excuse Kristen?

  81. Gossip Owl says:

I am with team social anxiety on this one. If it were emo bitch schtick her behavior would be consistent emo bitch all the time. It’s not which leads me to think it is social anxiety.
She seems more comfortable going one on one like it the latter interview. So I think it’s getting her comfortable being around larger groups.
Most actors and actresses are usually not outgoing people and it’s rather common of many them to be withdrawn and introverted. I would suggest she find a good therapist to help her overcome her anxiety and a body language expert to help her with her body language and communication skills. I think it would go a long way in helping her overcome it. People like James Wolcott need to understand that not everyone is enthusiastic to get up in front of an audience and talk about themselves. The media sometimes I think needs to be a tiny bit more sensitive to someone’s natural personality.

  82. Dizzy says:

She’s an “actress” can’t she act like she’s not shy. I’m very shy but I put on a act when it’s called for (like job interviews)

  83. Chris says:

“when is she going to stop acting like a teenager dragged out of her room to the dinner table?”

As a parent of a teenager I get that. You think K-Stew’s antics are annoying, try living with it. The worst part is that a lot of teenagers want to be treated like adults when it comes to having the freedom to drink, smoke and stay out late, but when it comes to being responsible and pulling your weight around the house or being courteous towards adults they want play the “I’m just a kid card”. Yup, they want all the freedom and none of the responsibility.

    End rant.

  84. Cate says:

@ almond yeah everyone kisses ass in hollywood but IMO, the directors, producers etc that praise Kristen aren’t doing it just to be nice and polite. They are way too in-depth and specific with the praise as opposed to saying something generic like Kristen is a hard worker or Kristen tries hard at her job. Sean Penn and Jon F and Jodie F etc have nothing to gain by complimenting Kristen years after their films were released, but they still continue to speak highly of her.

  85. Micki says:

She either has an anxiety disorder or very underdiveloped social skills. She can’t read people properly and acts often in offensive way.
If she has a problem I still want to point out that her “talent” should be a great help in dealing with it.
With ab.20 films under the belt she’s getting 20 variations of the same 20 questions and this all for years.I fail to see why she’s NOT getting better with time.

  86. Runs with Scissors says:

    @Ugh,
you’re actually comparing her to Lohan and Paris Hilton? With the drug arrests, robbery and sex tape? Really?
I’d say you’re the one with the exaggeration problem.

A lot of you sound very jealous.

Go back to licking your R-Patz pillows, lol!

She’s young still, she’ll figure it out.

  87. TG says:

@crizo – Thanks for giving all of us a good laugh.

  88. emm says:

Kristen loves the spotlight and at this point I believe her schtick is all an act. No way would she jump from Twilight to another franchise unless she was in love with fame. She needs to embrace her love of fame and stop the pretence. If she cared about acting she would not be Snow White. She would play a character that required acting skills.

  89. max says:

Robidiot, your demigod licks her azz day and night. He is the most pvssywhipped boy ever. Now go hug your Edward pillow.

  90. max says:

Kristen is a emo doing milions, you are a smart guy who for a living writes for a blog nobody cares about… yeah I agree with you, SHE is the loser here.

  91. sohana says:

Ugh-her apology for the rape comments came straight from her own mouth and was not a statement. She did not give any excuse, she said she says a lot of dumb things, but this was one thing she needed to address. That she learned she needed to use the word “violate” instead of rape, and that she felt very bad and she was especially regretful since she had been associated with RAINN through her “SPeak” role too.

I don’t knwo what else people could have wanted from her. If she hadn’t taken responsibility, she would have made an excuse. She didn’t, she apologized, she then explained what she learned from the process, and acknowledged that she let down people, including RAINN.

And UGh, speaking of hyperbole-likening her to paris hilton? Yeah. pot. kettle. black.

  92. sammib says:

Maybe I’m too old to get her but she bores the life out of me.

  93. Chris says:

“She either has an anxiety disorder or very underdiveloped social skills. She can’t read people properly and acts often in offensive way.”

If you want to try and slap diagnoses on her I’m going with Asperger’s syndrome. Some of the major traits of Asperger’s include impaired social and communication skills. The inability to read people is a big part of that and reading people is much harder to do in groups than it is one on one. Also, the reluctance to open up and talk can come from a fear of not wanting to say the wrong thing.

  94. terracotta says:

micki-that’s sort of the point though if she has an anxiety issue. It won’t get better and stay better. She will have like two steps forward, one step back progress. It’s something, like someone else said, that is managed, and sometimes she will manage it better than other times.

She definitely needs to work on it though, really figure out different ways to fortify herself for such situations. I don’t think it will ruin her career, but it can definitely distract from her career achievements, when focus is always on her curious behavior.

  95. Ro says:

There seems to be a lot of hate for a girl that no one knows personally. The only other time I’ve seen this many comments is when there’s Jolie/Aniston story. Congrats Kristen – you’ve made it and you didn’t even have be a homewrecker, release a sex tape or go to jail!

  96. Ugh says:

I should add, Kristen fans need to educate themselves. I didn’t say she was like Lohan and Hilton, just that Lohan and Hilton were like Stewart in the regard that they need to grow up and act their age. Making excuses for their behaviour has led to their fucked up lives. No wonder you lot like her, you’re just as moronic as she is. And no wonder she hates you lot, you’re all moronic!

Gotta love the “YOU’RE JEALOUS. GO KISS YOUR RPATTZ PILLOW” defence. Is that all you have? Really?

If you think she’s not snorting anything or smoking anything not readily available for purchase in the local store you need to get out more. See people, see the world.

  97. alexi says:

Her “affected emo shtick” has gotten tired? Really? How is this “tired”? There are almost 100 comments in here about the way Kristen talks and you tell me that you guys are “tired” talking about her? Please. You all are OBSESSED. I like her and one of the many reasons why is she can provoke emotions from people and make them care. Just look at you guys all emo yourselves! LOL! Who are you trying to convince that you’re “tired”? LOL!

  98. Sioux says:

Obviously the girl has some issues, imo I think she hates the whole twilight crap and the fans mostly. She refuses to sign autographs or even acknowledge them, she just seems so ungrateful. Of course the biggest thing is she can’t act, she just continues to play herself on screen. The director of SWATH said he only used her because of Twilight, he’s hoping the twifans will go and see it. What he fails to realize is these fans want Bella and Edward, none of her fans have supported any non twilight movie she’s made yet and she’s made a few since twilight’s been out.

  99. japangel says:

She seems very shy and also like she may suffer from an anxiety disorder of some sort. A chronic pot smoker may exhibit symptoms of exaggerated paranoia and other effects on their personality even when not high. She is clearly not high in these videos. She may have an anxiety problem independent of her pot smoking, but pot can also makes these issues worse for many people.

My husband smoked almost every day for 18 years; graduated with a Ph.D. from a top school in engineering. High functioning addicts are commonplace. It was only after he quit that I discovered all of his crazy, paranoid jealousy issues and anger were completely tied to his habit. That’s the trouble with relying on drugs/alcohol to cope with life – the user has no clue who they really are or what their mental/emotional problems are until they eliminate the drugs, familiarize themselves with their issues/emotions and learn to deal with them.

I don’t get all the hate for this girl either! I was much more troubled and self absorbed at her age than she appears and most of these young stars are as well. They are simply more adept at projecting the image that is expected of them. (Demi Lovato, anybody? That girl is VERY troubled. These children and in a tough business and in no more position to be “together” or a role model than anybody else their age.

  100. dim says:

I think that one on one video interview is the first time I’ve thought she looked really pretty. Her makeup is done really well there.

Anyway, I’m going with the social anxiety defense. If I were to think about myself in Kristen’s place, I’d probably be incredibly nervous too in a group interview with mics and and audience.

  101. Chloeeee says:

the funny thing is, everyime i see her interviewed and she REALLY does just seem awkward. She doesn’t come off as bitchy. I totally agree on the social disorder thing. I’ve had friends and worked with people who’ve had them and she IS kind of textbook. She is actually a great actress- she did a great job in Speak when she was a bit younger and has done some fine work in many indie films. As for her fidgety facial expressions, some people are just like that. I cringe when I see myself on camera because I’m all facial expression. I think she’s fine. And maybe the weed helps her lol.

  102. June says:

Whatever it is that Kristen Stewart is doing is working to attract attention and make people care about the movies she promotes. Just look at her banter with Charlize in Comic Con. They pretty much played B!tch Queen VS Snow White right there and yet you can’t tell when the stunt begins and ends. Kristen simply doesn’t come off as fake. Her lack of smooth talkin skills seems to appeal to the masses as genuineness, something predominantly absent in Hollywood. And because she’s the only one who talks that way, she sticks out like a sore thumb. But it’s arresting and it made you guys talk about her, provoking emotions, and eventually talk about her movie. Simple fact: HUNDREDS of movies and shows went to Comic Con last weekend and whatever Kristen Stewart was doing made you guys react to her ABOVE ALL OTHERS, drawing attention to her movies. Please. Did she or did she not do her job at Comic Con? I say she did her job pretty well.

  103. rockemsockem says:

    re: Kristen’s allegedly horrid acting.

No, I don’t believe what a director says about her on promotions. I DO however think the fact that David Fincher, Jodie Foster, Sean Penn, and Barry Levinson all PERSONALLY rec’d her for projects she eventually got pre-twilight illustrates the fact she has industry players in her corner.

Those are not names to sneeze at. I get that a lot of people can’t stand her acting style, sometimes I can’t either. But to act like she’s getting jobs cause she’s “lucky” is naive. For whatever reason, she is respected in the industry. Twilight and her (sometimes mis-) handling of fame has put her a couple steps backwards in terms of credibility. But it’s not “dumb luck” she’s gotten projects after someone like David Finch puts in a good word for you or Jodie Foster nominates your name for a new movie. And that’s exactly what happened.

  104. trh says:

@ crizo – inre: “case closed” … that was a case? That wasn’t even a coherent sentence.

A lot of actors smoke weed. A lot of actors have anxiety. Most figure out how handle themselves in public if they are successful.

  105. rockemsockem says:

Ugh: Educate ourselves? You didn’t even read your own quote properly. She’s running out of excuses? She mispoke at the age of 20, and apologized. That was a year ago. I mean, you have to dig that far back for something damning? Isn’t that a sign she’s improving? And recreational drug use among young hollywood is rampant, most realize this. Has there ever been that charge though from her, besides fan speculation that she’s using on the clock? No, cause this girl has a reputation for having a strong work ethic. Simple as that.

  106. rosac says:

    to orly:

Read your own quote again, it has nothing to do with the fans. She wasn’t paying attention to the hype that the producers and the studio was starting to buy into towards the end of filming. They were celebratory, counting their eggs before they hatched. She’s talking about the studio celebrating in front of her while she’s still trying to get the job done, them being smug, and she was like get away, I’m trying to deal with the ARRRRT of it all.

She’s being pretentious and her use of “retarded” is stupid. But how would that ever describe the fans? She’s talking about the “suits”-and how their celebrating before they had even finished filming was tacky on their behalf. Her words are clearly not for the fans, but the suits. her quote has been taken out of context though since that first publication.

  107. johnson says:

She was misquoted when she allegedly made that “retarded” comment about set stalkers. The MSN article was removed (I dare you to find the original article) because it was erroneous.

  108. johnson says:

Charlize on Kristen: “We’ve only met each other very briefly, but just in that small amount of time I can tell you that she’s going to give me a run for my money.” Charlize can be intimidating and Kristen doesn’t know her well yet. Kristen’s spoken more with Ben Lyons than with Charlize at this point. Once filming starts, she should feel more comfortable.

  109. jello says:

Oh good god, so she’s not an extraverted please like me like me please type Hollywood starlette celebrity. Sheesh. Do we really need our all celebrities to dance like frigging’ monkeys for us every time? She seems shy and nervous and it’s no big deal.

  110. ElleGin says:

I wouldn’t mind her “shyness” with interviews and public appearances if her acting was at least any good, but the fact that her acting SUCKS is what annoys the heck out of me.

  111. kikay says:

Congratulation Kstew ,hate you or love you, you’re second to Angelina’s popularity, these people can’t get enough of you,so just continue what you do and this people will always follow you, among your peers ,you’re the only one who made it SHTICK and all!

  112. Hibiscus says:

    Oh people, pleeease!

I’ve watched the videos now and fail to see what’s so terrible about it.

There is clearly someone with some kind of nervous issues trying her best going through this crowded, crazy event.

Seen her doing much worse in the past.
She’s actually very cute and pretty looking in these.

    I’ve been wondering if she’s very light-sensitive.
I am (among other neurological issues) and her constant blinking/squinting, looking down/up/to the side or close her eyes look strikingly familiar to me.
There are hundreds of pictures of me with very similar “silly” faces than the first one on this page.
I’ve also been dealing with people all my life interpreting my facial expressions as “looking stoned”, though I’ve never done that.

Anyway, I rather see Kristen looking like an awkward teen struggling through the situation than another attention-seeking, fake-grinning bimbo who looks at the age of 21 like 35 with all the plastic “enhancements” they’ve already done.
Some successful teenagers in the industry play the media game with a cold sleek professionalism, that just gives me the creeps.

She could let go of the swearing though.

  113. Danziger says:

I’m jumping on the pro-Kristen bandwagon here. I don’t condemn her awkwardness at ll, and whoever says she’s being ungrateful or rude, well, these things go hand in hand with social awkwardness, involuntarily. I’m sure she’d LOVE to be great and calm in interviews.
By looking how she behaves in interviews, sometimes calm, sometimes incredibly fidgety and like she really wants to cry and run, she reminds me of myself with her interview antics. And let me tell you, it sucks. it can’t be solved, you just have to manage it somehow, live with it, and it’s hard. You will come across as rude and insensitive at times, without yourself even knowing it. People will give you hard time because of your behaviour, which makes you spiral further into your anxiety. So give the girl a break, many of us have the same thing and so many here can recognize the signs of an anxiety she may or may not be aware of. Besides, while she’s not the greatest actress out there, she’s quite lovely in more low-key films. Twilight sucks, Kristen has admitted it (so has Rob by the way) herself, you couldn’t do better with a character who even in the book was whiny, ungrateful and angsty as shit.

  114. almond says:

Having a coherent opinion on something -even celebrity bullcrap- is a lot better than mangling my sentences and getting overwhelmed by my emotions. So I’ll write a Pratchett long series to properly express myself, if that’s what it takes. Bu-hu for fully formed sentences and ideas.

As for miss Stew, her issues with social communication can only be managed, indeed. Never did I say that had she sought help she would have been cured by now. But she should have been better. Just as well, I don’t see why she couldn’t slip into a new persona, one which is outgoing, engaged. If pretending to be someone else in film helps her deal with her issues, why not apply the same formula to her dealings with the public?

As for the rapist and retard remarks she made, they just show the penchant she has for hyperbole. She cannot express anything coherently or cohesively, her sentences are a mess both in terms of grammar and semantics, so she relies on big statements to express the importance of what she’s trying to communicate. It’s lazy and unintelligent. But if this is her lot in life, to be plagued by such strong social anxiety, then I’m sure that people will eventually come to accept it.

But all of the above is besides the point. Her acting is atrocious. She peaked in Speak. She was wonderful in that role, but every other she chose after it turned into a version of herself. And now, it’s worse than ever. It’s like she’s not even trying. And that’s such a paradox for someone who fancies herself a true thespian. When you factor in that she just jumped into another high-profile franchise, you start to wonder just how much she truly hates being high-profile and famous. She certainly acts like she’s above it all, the HW game and the PR game, but her next big project after Twilight is another potential blockbuster with no potential for challenging her amazing acting skills?

Oh, and of course, haterz gone hate. Right, krisbians? And they said Misery had the worst fanatic of them all…

  115. Jag says:

    re: Directors’ praises

If you were a big-name director and you worked with one of the leads of one of the hottest ever franchises, would you badmouth that person and alienate their adoring fans? I think not. Even if they hated her, unless they don’t care about never seeing a Twihard dollar, they’re going to say nice things.

My distaste for her stems from her words, not her body language. Time after time, she says things that make her appear ungrateful for the success she has; the success she was trying for, or else she would’ve stuck with indies or gone to theater. I don’t like her acting. Finally having seen the first 3 Twilight films, I completely agree with many of the comments about her acting mannerisms and lack of emotion onscreen.

If she has an anxiety disorder, I feel for her. But that doesn’t excuse her saying rude things.

  116. Sara says:

    @Heatheradair

That video made me laugh. I’m lucky I’m 30, when I was in highschool Angelina Jolie was the next big thing.

  117. HannahG says:

I thought it was just arrogance or a PR emo thing until I saw her on The Tonight Show once and I felt very sorry for her.

Saying that, regardless of any anxiety disorder she may have I think a lot of her behaviour is also down to lack of gratitude and arrogance. As many have pointed out – the Hollywood thing is a very brief holiday for her. She should really enjoy it. No one would notice if she bowed out now. They could hire another brunette to play Bella and fan girls would forget about KStew within the year.

  118. Danie says:

Um, she IS a teenager. Why are people expecting her to be this poised, sophisticated, cultured woman?
That is what I don’t get. Never have. Plus, she isn’t rude or anything..so what’s the problem???

  119. George says:

    Wow, women are mean!

I looked at the video and saw nothing to deserve this response. So she was nervous going front of a crowd of 9000 people. Is that a crime? She looked gorgeous and was smiling. Are you people really going to castigate for having a lighter in her back pocket? This pretty much sums up how unfair girls are to her. MEAN girls.

By the way, i am a huge Joan Jett fan and Kristen was outstanding in the role. Could not have been any better. I read pretty much every critci review and 90% said she was excellent. Even though Twilight is not my thing i can appreciate that millions love it. The Box office speaks for itself and i applaud her for having her private life and every nuance scrutinized by jealous no lifers, and still remaining down to earth and dedicated to her work. I doubt very many of you could have come through.

The future is bright for Kristen. Deal with it

  120. Carolyn says:

Right on Tigger (#34) for your list of young actresses who hold it together very well. Kristen was extremely lucky to land the role of Bella – there are a ton of girls who could have done it with more animation and feeling. I want her to break out of this PR-generated or real sloth and prove that she is a good actress. Or she can just go home and do something else. If I was her I’d be looking at Charlize for role model tips and motivators. On the other end of the scale we are tired of Reese Witherspoon type of gushing, nauseating fakeness in every interview she does. The curse of the internet is that actors are so overexposed and every thought is mass-quoted. It’s a fact that most of them just aren’t interesting or speak well as themselves. No wonder we’re over it all and call them out on it.

  121. fruitcake and milk says:

I understand her inability to speak publicly because I have had fear about public speaking. I was fine before I was about to go up the stage but after that I was shaking and can’t think properly. You can’t control it. It embarrassed me because I was just reading from a monitor and I was the top of my class.

Anyway, I think the main reason that Kristen took this Snow white franchise not because of this fame thing. I think the main reason is that the producer and Universal actually convince her that she can help change her image as the weak and whiny Bella by doing this action adventure which is guaranteed to be seen by most since her films are mostly Indies. It does makes sense. She maybe awkward and has social anxiety but I think she wants to have a good career. I don’t blame her, she worked hard for this since she was a child.

As for her acting, I agree she needs to improve but of course young people play characters that they can relate the most even that Jennifer Lawrence. Honesty I saw Winter Bone and I don’t know what the fuss is all about.

I don’t think it is shtick. I think her lack of confidence comes off as her being a jerk. Because she doesn’t really know how to handle all the sudden fame, her actions and words at times seem inappropriate. She doesn’t seem to have much of a personality, but maybe she doesn’t want the outside world to see it.

  123. rosac says:

Jag-you missed the earlier post that explained that she doesn’t just get empty praise in promotions. Her past directors were recommending her for projects she ended up getting. David Fincher was the one to introduce Sean Penn to her. Jodie Foster was the one to rec her for the film “The Yellow Hankerchief,” that’s how the director heard of her. Sean Penn was the guy who told the director of “Welcome to the Rileys” that he needed Kristen for the role.

So this isnt’ about empty praise. It’s about directors and actors working with her, and being impressed enough to say, “hey, check this girl out, she’d be great” to other folks for their projects.

Come on, David Fincher and Sean Penn and Barry Levinson are afraid to criticize her? Directors like DAVID FINCH don’t have to cower in Kristen’s presence, give me a break. lol This is about Kristen having some industry heavyweights in her corner.

This fantasy that all her past directors secretly hate her is just that-a fantasy that helps to further indulge people’s insistence she can’t act. I don’t think she’s perfect, I think she has a lot to improve upon, but she’s obviously talented enough to earn the respect of some ofthe biggest directing names in hollywood.

  125. TL says:

I’ve defended KSTEW in this article and others but I wonder how much is that she’s an attractive girl that has selling power due to Twilight that makes others think she’s a good actress? All Hollywood does these days is sell sex with good looking people that can read lines.

  126. almond says:

@ fruitcake and milk I never thought of it that way, but your reason for her accepting the SW role seems plausible. She DOES need to get out from under Bella’s shadow in a widely known and recognizable way.

@ rosac Subjectivity is an innate aspect of acting. Performance and interpretation are subject to critique and they can be deemed excellent or atrocious. My problem with Stewart isn’t even her take on the Bella character. That’s not the standard by which I hold her acting. Those books and films are absolute drivel without any cultural value to speak of. When I first saw the first film, I thought she did good job of the character, a better job, in fact, as she seemed to actually give Bella a bit of spine. So I got a hold of all her notable movies and sat through a marathon. She had definitely got my attention. But aside from Speak, where she was truly wonderful, I could not stomach any of her roles. They were variants of the Bella role. Same approach, same delivery of lines, same tics, for goodness sake. And when Adventureland and The Runaways and all the others cam eout, I watched them in the hopes that they show something new of her acting range. Tough luck. So while she may choose roles which are conveniently molded to her one trick pony method of acting and so the overall performance seems acceptable, even good, I cannot praise her for essentially playing herself.

As for the reason she got all those roles in indies, I think connections play a big part. Wasn’t the director of the first twilight movie good friends with Stew’s then boyfriend? Her talent alone could not have gotten her all those parts. And now she’s being shoved down the throats of directors by the big studios. Case in point, this Snow White crapfest.

Edit: I don’t know who said that her past directors hate her. I don’t think that’s the case at all. I understand that she’s very professional on set and very respectful of those she works with. Why would her former colleagues hate her?

But that doesn’t translate into her being this incredibly talented actress gathering praise and laurels from everyone in the industry. It’s a fine balance that must be kept between speaking well of those you worked with, praising the project itself and not coming off as overly sycophantic and asskissy. Some of her past directors have gone into exaggeration and hyperbole, comparing her to great figures of the American cinema. Come on.

  127. rosac says:

she’s not being shoved down director’s throats for the studios. This is where the fallacies are coming in.

KS’s ex-bf worked previously with CH, but he has no pull or say in her getting a part, he’s just a working actor. It was actually Sean Penn and Emile Hirsch who put a good word in for KS when CH was casting Twilight, and her name was prominent for her turn in “Into the wild” that had just come out, which had garnered her praise for her small role. That’s what happened with Twilight.

Yes, Rupert Sanders wanted an unknown initially for SW. Just like David Fincher wanted an unknown when people kept asking if Kristen was in the running for TGWTDT. And for good reason, she has “bella swan” written all over her right now. Their almost year long search for unknown talent came up empty though, and they ended up going with Kristen. She wasn’t shoved down his throat. And that’s because it’s not like she’s some huge box office queen, it’s clear she does not bring in the twihards for her other movies.

I don’t buy hyperbole either. But you don’t book gigs with Levinson, Figgis, Penn, Fincher, FAvreau before you’re 18 out of luck or coincidence. And furthermore you don’t have those same names offer you up for other friends who are putting together projects out of luck. They like her. I don’t think she’s perfect, I think she sucked in the land of women for instance. lol But you can’t discredit the fact she’s well liked by some of the most respected directors in hollywood at the moment. There is talent there along with a good work ethic, that’s all I”m saying. Being a good worker isn’t enough to book you those gigs.

I like her. The only problem I really have with her is her potty mouth, especially around kids. She was constantly cussing around the BD set in front of her onscreen daughter. Rob joked about how much money Makenzie Foy got out of he and Kristen everytime they said a cuss word. And she cussed at the ComicCon panel with kids in attendance. Its not cool Kristen. Grow up babe.

I almost feel for her. I have an anxiety disorder and when I have to speak in public in front of a HUGE crowd, I would be doing the same thing. But there are resources to help her combat this problem. The little nervous tics though are apparent in her acting as well…soooo…
I have also had friends who have said that smoking a lot of weed will make you paranoid and nervous.

  130. Anonymous says:

i kinda find this whole speculation about whether or not she has an anxiety disorder a little ridiculous… i would be pretty offended actually if someone who didn’t know me at all had the audacity to diagnose me with a disorder. i think it’s just her personality, and it’s fine. she may not be the most comfortable person @ giant public events, but i think she’s improved a lot and would prob improve a lot more if she wasn’t the most scrutinized young actress. yes i understand this a celeb gossip blog (before you jump down my throat) and ppl r uninterested in extending any amount of courtesy to ppl who “chose to be famous” but the same ppl comment on every kristen stewart entry with really nothing new to say. neither does the blogger….. but it’s getting to be a bit tedious. like it’s never really hating (& yes i use the word hate, i think it most def applies here) on her for what’s posted in the entry, it’s just drudging up all this ancient history w/ the retarded comment and the rape comment. i mean i would think she’s a pretty boring person to hate. she doesn’t really do much to gossip about except work and date robert pattinson.

i think this site’s sctick has gotten tired. kaiser, at least hate on ppl who have earned it. you’re not presenting anything new here. she seems only to be guilty of biting her lip and mouth breathing. she’s young, beautiful, rich, famous we’re all jealous. i get it. grow up.

god, i’ve given into this ridiculous board. i guess i can’t help the compulsion to write about people WE DON’T KNOW either.

She was als bullied as a kid after making her first movies and her parents didn’t let her deal with it. They pulled her out of school.

I think she didn’t learn proper coping skills and her parents sheltered her.

  133. lindah says:

She needs to come out of the closet already. she reminds me of jodie foster. KStew cannot act, is masculine and does not look natural in makeup. I wonder who was responsible for selecting kristen for the twilight series. I cannot watch it with her in it.

  134. jemshoes says:

I’m still sitting on the fence about Kristen Stewart (and waiting for her to grow up) but other readers’ comments about her possibly having a social and/or anxiety disorder are insightful. Shyness and anxiety are very different states of mind, and a part of me wonders if Kristen hides behind her shyness to cover up her real anxiety.

I sound like a K-Stew apologist! 😉 But I guess I’d rather be one than dislike her whilst she’s still under such intense scrutiny and unable to cope. Then again, she can try to act like she’s OK and up for it, as other readers have said. She’s an actress! That’s her job. And handling the media is a part of that job. Kaiser’s right: nothing wrong with getting some help if you need it. Shyness or anxiety in actors may be common but it’s not incurable, and professional help may be less fun than pot, but it’s really in her best interest to change this growing perception of her being entitled and emo.

  135. harfang says:

I thought Sparkles was her “lesbian beard” (I prefer the term “press-on nails”) for a long time. Now I think they are for real but she likes girls too. I also think she is very anxious, like maybe she has panic attacks and/or severe GAD, but because she is so bright and intriguing, the adults in her life didn’t get her any help when she was a teenager.

I also think she has a mind that is quick and needs a lot of stimuli in order for her to be calmer. This is not a compliment to her; that kind of thing is innate. She is responsible for learning to wrangle her own mind. On the other hand, the kid is 21 and grew up a child actor in a family of grips in Hollywood. I think she will make more sense to people later, but I have trouble caring about whether or not she does make sense. It’s refreshing to see someone who stays focused and shows real talent, while still being themselves, without going the way of Natasha Lyonne for example.

  136. VeneficA Delirium says:

She isn’t a great actress, and she always looks bored, but there are bigger bitches who deserve to be picked on.

  137. Lairen says:

Every time I see her ’emo schtick,’ I feel for her. Her awkwardness and alleged emoness is exactly like me (a social anxiety sufferer). I’ve had people ask me before, “What’s wrong with you?” or “What’s your problem?” when really I’m trying so hard to be normal, be friendly, be casual. It’s just not easy for some people, and I think it is very easy for social anxiety/phobia to be misconstrued.

On top of that, she could be taking classes or therapy – those things help, but it doesn’t cure it, nor does it make the phobia vanish quickly. I have been in therapy for my anxiety for years, plus I have tried medication and anxiety classes, and I still struggle with anxiety every day.

I look just like Stewart when I go out in public places and deal with people. On the outside, I look like I don’t want to be there, or don’t want to be talking to people. But on the inside, I’m struggling with my thoughts and fears, and want so badly to be comfortable in whatever situation I’m in, and want to be there even as a part of me wants to run away.

  138. Mylene says:

The “been here done that” attitude is only a facade. She’s so incredibly uncomfortable so she’s trying to hide it. I’m more and more convinced she has some kind of anxiety disorder. She should try kundalini yoga… She used to annoy me but now I see she’s more like me than I thought.

  139. Mylene says:

Also I don’t think she smokes before public appearances or at least not anymore. Perfect recipe for panic attacks and also her green eyes would probably be too red to hide.
